About This Program
Program Summary
The Phlebotomy Technician Program consists of 80 hours of lecture and lab. This certificate-level program meets for a total of 8 weeks. The Phlebotomy Technician program provides instruction in the skills needed for the proper collection of blood and other specimens used for diagnostics testing. Emphasis is placed on ethics, legalities, clinical safety, and mastering difficult draws. Upon successful completion, students will be able to demonstrate competence in the theoretical comprehension of phlebotomy techniques, demonstrate accepted professional communication and interpersonal skills, discuss phlebotomy in relation to the healthcare setting; identify the anatomic structure and function of the body systems in relation to services performed by a phlebotomist, a practice accepted procedures for transporting, processing specimens, and practice infection control following expanded precaution protocol. Students are provided with an NHA certification exam to become certified and recognized as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician.

- LPD 101: Leadership and Professional Development
Program Objectives
- Collecting, transporting, handling and processing blood specimens for analysis
- Recognizing the importance of specimen collection in the overall patient care system
- Utilize a working knowledge of the circulatory system
- Identifying and selecting equipment, supplies, and additives used in blood collection
- Recognizing factors that affect specimen collection procedures and test results, and taking appropriate actions within predetermined limits, when applicable
- Recognizing and adhering to infection control and safety policies and procedures
- Monitoring quality control within predetermined limits
- Recognizing the various components of the healthcare delivery system
- Recognizing the responsibilities of other laboratory and health care personnel and interacting with them with respect to their jobs and patient care
- Demonstrating professional conduct, stress management, interpersonal and communication skills with patients, peers, and other healthcare personnel and with the public
- Apply basic principles to learn new techniques and procedures
- Have an opportunity to gain a national certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) with the NHA.
General Admissions Requirements
All applicants must be 18 years of age or older and must submit:
· Official High School diploma or equivalency transcripts
· Government-issued photo identification

Transfer of Contact Hours Within Bell-Brown Medical Institute
The following courses may be challenged or transferred from within Bell-Brown Medical Institute pending approval from the Academic Dean.
LPD 101: Leadership and Professional Development (formally known as Capstone I and II)
Students that have completed LPD 101 (or CAP 101 and 102) within the past 2 years will be awarded 16 contact hours to transfer into the Comprehensive Medical Assistant, Clinical Medical Assistant, Patient Care Technician, and Phlebotomy programs.
Graduation Requirements
Student’s are required to complete the following courses with 70% or higher and pass all clinical competencies on a pass/fail system. The following courses are required to successfully complete the program:

PHE 101: Fundamentals of Phlebotomy: 35 Instructional, 29 Lab = 64 Total
LPD 101 Leadership and Professional Development : = 6 Instructional, 10 Lab: 16 Total

Performance Competencies
The Performance requirements are evaluated on a pass/fail system. Students must pass with 100% accuracy in order to satisfy the requirement. Students who fail any of their performance requirements will have an opportunity to be remediated and re-evaluated to demonstrate proficient skills with a maximum of three separate attempts.
Students must demonstrate proficiency in all performance requirements at the end of each program or program course. Performance requirements for this program:

- Capillary Blood Collection
- Handwashing
- PPE Competency Checklists
- Venipuncture – Syringe Method
- Venipuncture – Evacuated Tube Method
- Venipuncture – Winged Infusion Method
National Certifications
Students that successfully complete the Phlebotomy Technician program will have the opportunity to take certification examinations with the National Health Career Association (NHA) and the American Red Cross. The first attempt at these exams is at no cost to the graduate. Additional attempts will be at the student’s expense.
Students that complete PHE 101 course successfully will receive their certifications with the American Red Cross in:
- Bloodborne Pathogen Training Certification
The NHA certification exams that graduates are eligible to take for the Phlebotomy Technician program is the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT).
NHA practice exams are supplied to the graduate at no-cost through the NHA website. In order to qualify to sit for the initial exam, graduates must pass at least two (2) practice exams with a 70% or higher. Once this has been achieved by the graduate, the exam(s) can be scheduled by logging into the student NHA account. A maximum of one (1) national certification exam can be taken in a one-week period. Additional certification exam attempts must be scheduled a week apart from each other. The graduate is responsible for contacting the Campus Director to ensure the practice test requirements are met and to schedule the date and time of the exam(s).
